Why Your Business Website Gets No Enquiries (7 Fixable Reasons)
A website that gets no enquiries is usually not ugly. It is usually invisible, slow, or unclear about what it wants you to do.
You paid for a website. It looks reasonable. Months later it has produced nothing. When we audit sites in this position, the cause is almost always one of seven things — and rarely the design.
1. Nobody can find it
The most common cause by a distance. Search your own business category plus your city and see whether you appear at all. If you do not, the website is not underperforming — it simply has no audience.
Check that your sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console, that it points to your live domain, and that each page has a unique title. We have audited sites whose sitemap pointed at a dead staging domain for over a year; the entire site was effectively invisible.
2. It is not in the Google Maps results
For any search that ends in a city name, the map results sit above everything else and take most of the clicks. If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, incomplete, or has three reviews while a competitor has ninety, no amount of website work will outrank that.
This is the highest-return fix available to most local businesses, and it costs nothing but time.
3. It is too slow on a phone
Most of your visitors are on mobile data, not office wifi. A homepage carrying several megabytes of uncompressed images takes long enough to load that a meaningful share of visitors leave before seeing anything. Compress images, serve WebP, and lazy-load anything below the fold.
Test on an actual phone on mobile data, not on your desktop.
4. It does not say where you are
Plenty of local business websites never state their city clearly. If your pages do not mention Madurai, Google has little reason to show you for "in Madurai" searches, and a visitor cannot tell whether you serve them. Put the city in your titles, headings and footer, and put the full address on every page.
5. There is nothing to build trust
Anonymous testimonials — "Great service! — A happy client" — persuade nobody. Neither do stock photos of offices you do not work in. What works: real names, real company names, real photographs of your team and your actual work, and specific numbers.
One detailed case study with a named client is worth more than twenty generic testimonials.
6. It is not clear what to do next
Count the ways someone can contact you from your homepage without scrolling. On a phone, is your number a tappable link? Is there a WhatsApp option, given that most Indian customers prefer it to email? Is there a short form, or a fifteen-field one that nobody will complete?
Reduce the form to name, phone and one message field. Every field you remove increases completions.
7. There is nothing on it worth finding
A site with five pages, all of them sales pages, can only ever appear for five searches. Your customers are typing questions — what something costs, how to choose between options, whether a thing is worth doing. If you have not answered those questions on your site, someone else has, and they get the visitor.
This is slower than the other six fixes and it is the one that compounds. A post answering a real customer question keeps bringing people in for years.
The order to fix them in
- Confirm you are indexed and your sitemap is correct — a day's work at most.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, then ask past customers for reviews.
- Compress your images and check mobile load time.
- Add your city to titles and headings; put your address and a tappable phone number everywhere.
- Replace anonymous testimonials with named ones and add real photographs.
- Cut your contact form down to three fields and add WhatsApp.
- Start publishing answers to the questions customers actually ask.
The first six are mostly finished within a fortnight. The seventh is ongoing, and it is the one that eventually matters most.
Frequently asked questions
How long before a new website starts getting enquiries?
With a correct technical setup and an active Google Business Profile, local enquiries often begin within 4 to 8 weeks. Rankings for competitive search terms typically take 6 months or more.
Why is my website not showing on Google at all?
Most often the site is not indexed, the sitemap points to the wrong domain, or pages are blocked in robots.txt. Check Google Search Console first — it will tell you which pages Google has actually seen.
Does a Google Business Profile matter more than a website?
For local service businesses, often yes. Map results appear above organic listings for city-based searches and receive a large share of clicks, so an optimised profile with reviews usually returns results faster.
